How to Design the Perfect Fireplace Remodel for YOU
Whether you’re giving your whole home a facelift or just looking to update a few features, chances are if you have one, you’re wanting to remodel your fireplace too.
The question is: how do you make sure you’re happy with the end result?
It’s Not Always as Simple as You Think
This is the cold, hard truth.
Far too many people decide to get their fireplace remodeled and think it’s going to be as easy as picking a stone and scheduling an installation.
To be fair, it can be that easy with a professional team like Cre8Stone.
However, you’re going to miss out on getting the best results if you don’t invest some time in choosing and planning your design with us.
So how do you help us make sure you’ll enjoy the design of your remodeled fireplace for years to come?
Let’s show you!
Decide on Whether You REALLY Need to Remodel
Remodeling is messy work.
You need to visit a showcase or fireplace dealership to choose a new one, organize measurements, have the existing fireplace torn out, and then the new one installed.
This takes a long time. And in the meantime, you’re sitting with an ugly hole in your wall.
Why not consider having your existing fireplace resurfaced instead?
There’s no mess, no fuss, and once the project begins, installation could only take a few hours – depending on the size of your fireplace, of course.
Think About the Style and Color of Your Stone
When it comes to stone resurfacing and remodeling fireplaces in general, you can opt for natural stone or a lightweight cultured stone.
Natural stone is a popular choice due to its beauty, but it can be super expensive – and rather heavy, too.
However, lightweight cultured stone is just as beautiful. And for a much lower price, you can decide what kind of coloring you want – almost without limit!
This is a really great option, as it allows you to design your fireplace remodel with greater freedom.
All you need to do is find some inspiration, think about the color scheme of your home, and talk with an expert about the options available.
Consider the Trim and Patterning
A very important part of the overall design of your fireplace remodel is the cut of your stone overlays.
The best way to go about this is to take a look at examples online.
There’s so much variety available that it’s very easy to find something perfectly (or very nearly so) matching your vision.
For example, you might decide to incorporate keystones and/or accent stones. You might even use trim stones to make an arch pattern over the fireplace opening.
This is already touching on the pattern of your stone overlays, but we’ll go into a little more detail in the next section.
Focus on the Overall Design
Now that you’ve got the coloring and trim decided on, it’s time to focus on the overall design.
Once again, you can turn to the wide selection of examples online to help you decide.
While you should let your imagination lead you, be careful not to pick a design that doesn’t match the rest of your room.
Other than that, however, you shouldn’t have to place any constraints on the design pattern you want.
While some stone veneer manufacturers are reliant on templates, others aren’t. Depending on the design you’re wanting to put in, you’re almost always going to need a manufacturer unconstrained by templates.
This is because using templates makes almost every stone overlay look exactly the same.
You lose out of the natural variety you would ordinarily get with natural stone and the end result looks too uniform.
Hand-crafted overlay pieces, on the other hand, don’t suffer the same fate. Each stone is wholly unique – especially when made with a proprietary blend that can’t be replicated by anyone else.
This also gives you greater freedom in your choice of design, as even the most irregular of patterns can be created.
Quite literally the only advantage templates afford you is the absolute surety that every piece will fit together perfectly.
But once again, by relying on an expert team who puts every ounce of attention to detail into hand-crafting each individual stone overlay piece, that doesn’t have to be a problem no matter your chosen pattern.
Mantle Woes Begone
Another awesome advantage in using stone overlays to remodel your fireplace is the fact you won’t have to take out (and then reinstall) your mantel.
Instead, all that happens is your installation team works around the existing mantel. It takes away all the mess and the fuss without disturbing your home.
Of course, if you don’t already have a mantel but you do want one, it can easily be installed at the same time. However, this will take longer than installing your stone overlays and will almost definitely create some mess.
Still, the great news is you can use any material you want. And if you want it to match the rest of your fireplace perfectly, you can even ask for the mantel to be resurfaced too!
Design Your Hearth
No fireplace remodel is complete without a hearth.
You can really play around with the design here too. For example, you can use matching stones in a different pattern, or have the same pattern continued.
One thing you do need to be careful of with some manufacturers is their hearthstones often look fake and even ugly.
Luckily, the beauty of having a team that does everything from scratch – to your exact specifications and with your supervision over the installation process – is getting to dictate how your hearth turns out.
At the end of the day, we’re sure these tips will help you get the fireplace design of your dreams!
I really like that you were pretty clear about how it’s actually a pretty hard thing to install a fireplace. My son and I were going to try and put one in on our own, but after reading your article, it’s probably wiser to get help. I’ll share this information with my wife tonight so that we can make a new plan of how to get a fireplace in our home.
